MEDINA – In a significant move to enhance the pilgrimage experience for millions, Saudi Arabia has officially inaugurated the Smart Engineering Center for Command and Control at the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid Nabawi). The facility is designed to monitor mosque operations in real-time, 24/7, ahead of the anticipated surge in visitors during Ramadan 1447H.
The center was inaugurated by Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, the Minister of Hajj and Umrah and Chairman of the Board of the General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques. This launch underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to integrating advanced digital infrastructure into the management of its holiest sites.

A Technical Marvel in the Heart of Medina
Spanning an area of 315 square meters, the command center serves as the “digital brain” of the mosque. The facility is equipped with 22 massive display screens that provide a comprehensive visual overview of the complex’s assets, crowd flow, and service performance.
The center utilizes cutting-edge technology to streamline operations, including:
- Smart Notification Platforms: Instant alerts for technical faults or logistical bottlenecks.
- Compliance Monitoring Tools: Ensuring that service standards for pilgrims are strictly maintained.
- Real-Time Data Analytics: Turning raw data into actionable insights to improve crowd management and facility maintenance.
24/7 Precision Management
To ensure seamless operations during high-pressure seasons like Ramadan and Hajj, the center operates around the clock. A team of specialized professionals manages the facility across four shifts, ensuring that the mosque’s infrastructure remains optimal at all times.
By analyzing real-time feedback and asset conditions, the center allows authorities to move from a reactive to a proactive management style. This means potential issues—from cooling system adjustments to crowd distribution—can be addressed before they impact the pilgrim experience.
The Future of Pilgrimage (Vision 2030)
This technological leap is part of a broader strategy to modernize the Two Holy Mosques. Along with the recently launched “Jai lil Umrah” campaign, Saudi Arabia is focusing on high-tech solutions to ensure that the spiritual journey of every visitor is safe, orderly, and world-class.
As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, the Smart Command Center stands as a testament to the Kingdom’s digital transformation, merging centuries-old tradition with 21st-century innovation.
