January 25, India – The Government of India has announced a major technological breakthrough for the 2026 Haj pilgrimage, integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced digital tools to fortify pilgrim security. This initiative marks a significant shift toward a more modern, responsive, and data-driven Haj management system.
Danish Azad Ansari, Uttar Pradesh Minister of State for Minority Affairs, revealed that the government’s primary focus for the upcoming season is ensuring maximum safety through wearable technology. Every Indian pilgrim will be equipped with a specialized smart hand band featuring a built-in emergency button.
SOS Innovation and Real-Time Monitoring
Ansari explained that these smart bands are designed to provide multi-layered protection. Through the SOS button, pilgrims can transmit instant distress signals to a centralized command center in the event of medical emergencies or physical distress amidst the massive crowds.
”These devices enable real-time monitoring and a swift response to any situation a pilgrim might face. This is a concrete step toward elevating our standards of safety and convenience,” Ansari stated in an interview with the PTI news agency.
Furthermore, this system addresses the logistical challenge of field supervision. Currently, Indian Haj authorities maintain a ratio of one inspector per 150 pilgrims. The introduction of AI-based tracking is expected to bridge coordination gaps, allowing officials to monitor individual movements and locations more effectively than ever before.
Evaluating Readiness in Makkah
To ensure the seamless implementation of this technology, a high-level committee led by Ansari recently conducted an official visit to Makkah, Saudi Arabia. The delegation included senior officials from India’s Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Minority Affairs.
The purpose of the mission was to evaluate ground infrastructure and ensure that coordination with Saudi authorities aligns with the new security protocols. The Indian government projects that approximately 125,000 pilgrims will travel to the Holy City for the 2026 Haj season.

This initiative is part of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi administration’s broader commitment to providing superior facilities for citizens undertaking the sacred journey. By harnessing sophisticated digital tools, the government aims to streamline the entire Haj operation—from logistics coordination to emergency medical protocols.
”Prioritizing the welfare, comfort, and security of our Haj pilgrims remains the cornerstone of the government’s efforts,” Ansari emphasized.
Through these proactive measures, India seeks to establish a new international benchmark for a safer, more organized, and technologically integrated spiritual journey for its devotees.
